Graph of the Week: How Different Industries Stack Up in Job Creation vs. Export Value

The share of Canadian jobs embodied in an industry’s exports can differ markedly from its share in Canadian exports. In some cases, including professional and technical services – such as engineering or research and development – as well as food and accommodation, transportation and warehousing, and arts and entertainment, the share of jobs embodied in exports exceeds the industry’s share in the value of exports. The reverse is true in other, often more capital-intensive industries, such as some natural resources and manufacturing.
