In remarks at a recent Policy Roundtable luncheon, J. Robert S. Prichard, President and CEO, Torstar Corporation and President Emeritus, University of Toronto, proposed a practical and effective reform to post secondary education funding that would promote wider use of merit-based pay for university professors. Commenting on the “superb” Commentary by John Chant, How We Pay professors and Why it Matters, Prichard proposes that the province of Ontario create and fund a new funding envelope within the existing funding formula. Access to the funds would be expressly conditional upon each university addressing the issue of faculty performance. It would be controversial but be good for the institutions and their faculty and students, and improve performance, he asserted.
