February 17, 2022 – William Robson, CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of Åke Blomqvist as a Fellow-in-Residence.

“Åke is a thought-provoking contributor to the C.D. Howe Institute’s work generally, and particularly to our Healthcare Policy Initiative,” said Robson. “His insights and knowledge about healthcare systems in Canada and globally make him a great resource, and his devotion to improving outcomes makes him an outstanding policy analyst and advocate.”

“Good public policy typically draws both on the theoretical ideas of academics and the practical insights of insiders,” said Blomqvist.

“The C.D. Howe Institute goes to great lengths in trying to get the two camps to talk honestly to each other, and to improve the quality of the debate over economic policy in Canada. I have learned a lot from participating in the work on health policy over the years; it is an area where there will be a lot of challenges as we try to ‘build back better.’”

A native of Sweden, Blomqvist received his PhD in Economics from Princeton in 1971. He taught at the University of Western Ontario until 2002 and then for nearly a decade in Singapore and Beijing. He has lived in Ottawa since 2011 and is an Adjunct Research Professor at Carleton University.

His areas of research have included economics of developing countries, and economics of healthcare, including health financing and policy in Canada and other countries including China. He has been a frequent contributor to publications under the C.D. Howe Institute’s Healthcare Policy Initiative, a project that draws on expertise from both academics and individuals with experience in the politics and management of the healthcare system.
