June 1, 2018 – Hugh L. MacKinnon, Chair of the C.D. Howe Institute’s Board of Directors, announces the appointment of Shirlee Sharkey as a member of the Board. Kennedy was elected at the Institute’s Annual and Special Meeting of Members, May 30, 2018.

“Our leadership group welcomes Shirlee’s experience as a healthcare industry leader, and her energy in promoting better public policy,” said MacKinnon. “I am delighted to welcome Shirlee to the Board and look forward to collaborating on the Institute’s goal of improving the lives of Canadians through fact-based policy research.”

Sharkey is the President and CEO of Saint Elizabeth, a national social enterprise providing home care, health solutions and education to people where they are and when they need it. She is also the current Chair of Excellence Canada and a member of the Canadian Centre for Aging and Brain Health Innovation Committee of the Baycrest Board. In January 2014, Sharkey was appointed to chair the Ontario Health Technology Advisory Committee, a standing committee for Health Quality Ontario. She also serves on the Ontario Health Innovation Council.

Academically, Sharkey is cross-appointed to the University of Toronto’s Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing and the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation as an adjunct professor. In 2017, she received an honourary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Ontario Institute of Technology.

In 2012, Sharkey received the Diamond Jubilee Medal of Queen Elizabeth II, and accepted the Order of Excellence from Excellence Canada in organizational innovation, quality and wellness.
