October 16, 2012 – William Robson, President and Chief Executive Officer of the C.D. Howe Institute, today announced the appointment of a new member to the Institute’s prestigious Monetary Policy Council (MPC). He is Paul Beaudry, Professor and Canada Research Chair in Macroeconomics at the University of British Columbia.

“Paul Beaudry is in the forefront of Canadian economists,” said Mr. Robson, who is the MPC’s non-voting chair. “His work has contributed to our understanding of economic growth, cycles, labour markets, and much more. The Monetary Policy Council will benefit greatly from his insights.”

Professor Beaudry has held regular faculty positions at the Université de Montréal, Boston University and the University of Oxford, and has held visiting faculty positions at MIT, Sorbonne Paris I, and the University of Toulouse.

He has published widely in the areas of macroeconomics, labour economics, monetary policy, technical change, and growth. He is a frequent contributor at national and international conferences. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada,  a Research Associate at the U.S. National Bureau of Economic Research, and held a 2010 Bank of Canada Research Fellowship. Most recently, Professor Beaudry has published in the area of income distribution and business cycles, and is currently working on job creation, debt-fueled expansion and financial crisis.

Professor Beaudry received a BA from Laval University (1983), an MA in Economics from the University of British Columbia (1984), and a PhD in Economics from Princeton University (1989). He was born in Montreal.

The MPC comprises 12 of Canada’s most distinguished financial-market and monetary economists. By convening to discuss the Bank of Canada’s target for the overnight rate – the benchmark interest rate it uses to influence monetary conditions in Canada – shortly before each of the Bank’s interest-rate announcements, the Council provides a regular, independent assessment of the Bank’s stance as it seeks to achieve its 2 percent inflation target.
