December 16, 2020 – William Robson, CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of Elyse Allan as a senior fellow of the Institute.

Howe Institute, notably on the Institute’s Energy Policy Council, National Council, and Board of Directors, and as a senior fellow. We are delighted to continue our collaboration with her.”

Allan is the former president and chief executive officer of General Electric Canada and Vice President of General Electric. Her 30-year association with GE includes experience in the US and Canada and across GE’s industrial, technology and consumer businesses. Her background also includes Senior Executive roles at Ontario Hydro and leading the Toronto Board of Trade as president and chief executive officer.
Throughout her career, Allan actively engaged in public policy: she served as Chair of the Board of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, and on the boards of several policy organizations including the Conference Board of Canada, the Policy Forum, and the Canadian Council of Chief Executives (Business Roundtable). Currently she is a Board director for the Mars Discovery District. Allan also served on government advisory boards at the provincial and federal levels contributing to policy development on energy, taxation, and economic strategy. Most recently Allan participated on the Federal Finance Minister’s Economic Growth Council.
In 2015 Allan joined the Board of Directors for Brookfield Asset Management, a Canadian global alternative asset manager. She also sits on the Westinghouse Electric Company Board and serves as vice-chair and director for the recently created provincial agency, Ontario Health.
Numerous organizations have recognized Allan for her business and community leadership, contribution to women in business, and support for girls in STEM. She received honourary doctorate degrees from four Canadian institutions and in 2014, she was appointed Member of the Order of Canada for her community engagement and achievements as an innovative business leader.
Allan earned her Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth, where she serves as an advisor to the Revers Center for Energy and currently chairs the Tuck School Board of Overseers.
