March 26, 2020 – William Robson, CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of Gordon Thiessen as a Senior Fellow.
“Gordon’s extensive public service, notably his outstanding career at the Bank of Canada, make him a pre-eminent source of wisdom on Canadian monetary policy and macroeconomic policy,” said Robson. “The C.D. Howe Institute values his contributions, and looks forward to further collaboration.”

Gordon Thiessen was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada on 1 February 1994, for a term of seven years, retiring on 31 January 2001.
Thiessen studied economics at the University of Saskatchewan and received an Honours BA in 1960 and an MA in 1961. He attended the London School of Economics, from which he received his PhD in Economics in 1972. He joined the Bank of Canada in 1963 and worked there for much of his career.
After retiring from the Bank of Canada he helped to establish the Canadian Public Accountability Board to oversee the quality of auditing of public companies in Canada. He was its Founding Chair from 2002 to 2008.
In 1996, the government of Sweden awarded Thiessen the Order of the Polar Star in recognition of the assistance provided by the Bank of Canada to the Swedish central bank. Thiessen has received honourary degrees from the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Ottawa. He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002.
