October 13, 2023 – We are pleased to announce Luba Petersen has joined the C.D. Howe Institute as a Research Fellow and a member of the Institute’s prestigious Monetary Policy Council.

An Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at Simon Fraser University and past C.D. Howe Institute author, Luba’s research focuses on the design of monetary policy and central bank communication. She replaces Pierre Siklos, Professor of Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University, who has served on the Monetary Policy Council since 2008.

“I am delighted to welcome Luba to the Institute and look forward to the monetary policy insights she will share with our researchers and our Monetary Policy Council,” says CEO William B.P. Robson, who serves as Chair of the Council. “We thank Pierre Siklos for many years of valuable contributions to the Council and are proud to continue to work with him as a Research Fellow.”

Luba also serves as co-director of the SFU Experimental Economics Laboratory; Research Associate of the NBER; a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research in Cambridge, M.A.; and an Advisory Council Member for the Society for Computational Economics. Recently, she was a Department Special Advisor to the Bank of Canada and a Visiting Fellow in the Economics Research Department at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco from 2022 to 2023.

The Monetary Policy Council is comprised of 12 of Canada’s most distinguished financial-market and monetary economists. It provides the Bank of Canada, financial-market participants and economic policy commentators with a regular independent assessment of the appropriate stance of Canadian monetary policy as the Bank of Canada pursues its 2 percent inflation target.
