March 31, 2023 – The C.D. Howe Institute is pleased to welcome Maureen Jensen and Peter Levitt as the new Co-Chairs for its Financial Services Research Initiative (FSRI).

Effective April 20, 2023, Ms. Jensen and Mr. Levitt take over the position from Nicholas Le Pan, who expertly served as Chair for eight years. We thank Mr. Le Pan for expert leadership of the program and the FSRI Council.

The FSRI is a multi-year C.D. Howe Institute research program on financial sector policy. Its work addresses the economic environment for Canadian financial services, the regulatory framework that underpins the sector’s contributions to the Canadian economy, and the future of financial intermediation. The FSRI Council advises the program, and convenes regularly for exchanges of views among representatives of industry, academia, and the public sector.

“I am pleased to co-chair the FSRI at the C.D. Howe Institute,” said Ms. Jenson. “It allows me to engage in important policy issues facing both Canadian financial institutions and the economy.”

“As a member of the FSRI Council for the past decade, I have witnessed the contribution it makes to exceptional thought-leadership and public policy work for which the C.D. Howe Institute is renowned,” Mr. Levitt added. “I am delighted and honoured to be appointed to this important role at the Institute.”

Ms. Jensen is the former CEO of the Ontario Securities Commission and is a seasoned board member, having served on committees for Franco-Nevada, Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments and is a former chair of The Prosperity Project. Mr. Levitt is the former Executive Vice President and Treasurer at CIBC. He serves on a number of corporate and not-for-profit boards, including E-L Financial Corp Ltd, Novacap, and United for Literacy.

“We are grateful to Nick Le Pan for his leadership of the FSRI Council, and look forward to continued association with him as a Senior Fellow of the C.D. Howe Institute,” said C.D. Howe Institute President Duncan Munn. “Maureen Jensen and Peter Levitt have extensive experience in Canada’s capital markets and banking, and are highly respected for their wisdom and policy insights,” said Institute CEO, William B.P. Robson. “In collaboration with Jeremy Kronick, the Institute’s Director of Monetary and Financial Services Research, they will ensure that the FSRI continues to offer top-notch analysis and policy recommendations for this vital sector.”
