November 14, 2019 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of Richard Alvarez as a Senior Fellow.

“Richard’s expertise in digital health is recognized in Canada and around the world,” said Robson. “The C.D. Howe Institute has benefited from his organization and chairmanship of the annual Health Partnership Summit together with his participation in the Health Policy Council, and we look forward to continued collaboration.”

Richard Alvarez is CEO, Richard Alvarez & Associates. As former President and Chief Executive Officer of Canada Health Infoway, he was a catalyst for accelerating the development of electronic health records in Canada. He is known for taking on challenging mandates and advocating for the power of digital health as a key enabler to transform and sustain modern health care systems. In this respect, he continues to provide senior-level strategic advice to governments and health care leadership on a global basis.

Prior to his role at Infoway, Mr. Alvarez also played a key role in harnessing the power of information to improve health care. As former President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI), he helped CIHI evolve into a well-known and respected organization with strong ties to the research community

Mr. Alvarez earned the Institute of Corporate Directors certification at the Rotman School of Management. In 2007 he was recognized as the Nation Builder Inductee to the Canadian Information Productivity Awards (CIPA) Hall of Fame for the leadership he has exercised throughout his career.  Additionally, he is a past recipient of the Who’s Who in Canada award.

Mr. Alvarez is a frequent speaker and facilitator at national and international health care conferences, he sits on several Boards in addition to being a global health advisory to PwC in the Middle East and NexJ Health in Ontario.
