AI’s Evolving Influence in the Healthcare of the Future

Artificial Intelligence reach keeps expanding, transforming industries and creating a myriad of opportunities and challenges. The Health Care sector has not been immune to AI’s appeal as vast amounts are being invested in the hope of revolutionizing the system. Our panelists will describe in detail how AI is currently being implemented and what it could look like in the future. As innovative technologies are created, effective regulations will be necessary to facilitate a practical and successful market deployment.

Panelist Biographies

Michael Duong, Head of Personalized Healthcare, Hoffman-La Roche

Michael is the Head of Personalized Healthcare for Hoffmann-La Roche Limited.  In this role, Michael leads a team responsible for Roche’s strategy to advance the personalization of healthcare in Canada.  Michael also sits on the board of the Canadian Personalized Healthcare Innovation Network (CPHIN) which is a not for profit consortium of members from both public and private sectors focused on the acceleration of personalized healthcare for Canada.

Michael received his undergraduate degree in Biology and Pharmacology and a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences with a specialization in Neuroscience, both from McMaster University.

 

David K. Lee, Chief Regulatory Officer Health Canada

David K. Lee is the Chief Regulatory Officer for the Health Products and Food Branch. In this role, he advises on regulatory matters across the Branch; guides the development of legislative and regulatory amendments; leads foresight initiatives for food and health product regulation; and coordinates with the Department of Justice on certain litigation.

David was previously the Director of the Office of Legislative and Regulatory Modernization, Health Canada. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Office of Patented Medicines and Liaison which administered the Patented Medicines (Notice of Compliance) Regulations and provided liaison for health product litigation.

David received his law degree at Queen’s University, and articled at the Federal Court of Canada. He worked in private practice until joining Health Canada in 1999. He has lectured extensively on intellectual property law and food and drug law both nationally and internationally.  

 

Bo Wang, Lead Artificial Intelligence Scientist, Peter Munk Cardiac Centre and the Techna Institute at the UHN

Bo Wang is an assistant professor at the Department of Medical Biophysics at the University of Toronto, a faculty member at the Vector Institute, and Canada’s CIFAR chair in artificial intelligence. He also leads the AI team for the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at the University Health Network.

Bo obtained his PhD from the Department of Computer Science at Stanford University, and has extensive industrial research experience at many leading companies such as Illumina and Genentech. His PhD work covers statistical methods for solving problems in computational biology with an emphasis on integrative cancer analysis and single-cell analysis.

Bo’s long-term research goals aim to develop integrative and interpretable machine learning algorithms that can help clinicians with predictive models and decision support to tailor patients’ care to their unique clinical and genomic traits.
