Toronto ON, Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt Lecture Hall, C.D. Howe Institute, 67 Yonge Street, Suite 300

Tuesday May 29, 2012 Toronto Roundtable Event - A Common Securities Regulator for Canada: The Way Forward

The Supreme Court of Canada ruled in December that the federal government’s proposed Securities Act would exceed federal jurisdiction but the Court suggest the federal and provincial governments could cooperate to create a common regulatory structure. Doug Hyndman discussed the Court decision and described how governments can jointly establish a common securities regulator to protect investors and support competitive Canadian markets.

Mr. Hyndman was appointed Chair and CEO of the Transition Office in July 2009. Prior to that, he had been Chair of the British Columbia Securities Commission since 1987. He was also Chair of the Accounting Standards Oversight Council from 2005 to 2010.

From 1995 to 2003, Mr. Hyndman was Chair of the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) and from 2005 to 2009, he chaired the CSA’s Passport Steering Committee.

After receiving his BA (Economics) from the University of British Columbia and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario, he joined the B.C. Ministry of Finance in 1975, serving in various positions within the Treasury Board staff division. Between 1984 and 1987, he was Assistant Deputy Minister with responsibility for advising the government on economic, fiscal, budgetary and tax policy.
