Scott Hendry, Senior Special Director, Financial Technology (FinTech), Funds Management and Banking Department, Bank of Canada

Scott Hendry was appointed Senior Special Director, Financial Technology (FinTech) in the Funds Management and Banking Department (FBD) in June 2016. In this role, he oversees the Bank’s efforts to monitor and research developments and implications of new technologies affecting the financial sector. He previously held the role of Director of Research for FBD and, before that, for the Financial Markets Department (FMD). His personal research has focused on electronic money, price discovery in the Canadian government bond market, and central bank communication. He has a PhD in Economics from the University of Western Ontario.

 

Thorsten Koeppl, Professor of Economics and RBC Fellow, Queen's University

Professor Koeppl is Professor and RBC Fellow in the Department of Economics at Queen’s University and Scholar in Financial Services and Monetary Policy at the Institute.

He has degrees in management and in economics from the Universities of Eichstaett/Ingolstadt and Basle, and received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota in 2002.

He has served as an advisor to the Bank of Canada and several other policy institutions in matters of financial market organization, regulation and intervention. In 2011, he received the Bank of Canada’s Governors Award for his research on financial market infrastructure.

His main research interests fall also in the areas of macroeconomics, monetary economics as well as risk management.

 

Virgile Rostand, President and Founder, Coinsquare

Recognizing the growing demand for cryptocurrency exchanges, Coinsquare Founder and President Virgile Rostand incorporated Coinsquare in 2014. Earning a M.Sc., Applied Mathematics and Ph.D. in Mathematics from Université Laval and a Master of Mathematics from the Univeristy of Toronto, Rostand embarked upon positions as a financial engineer and consultant working on high-end financial applications used at banks and hedge funds, including BMO and R2 Financial Technologies. With his background in mathematics and his previous engineering roles, Rostand couldn’t ignore the emergence of blockchain technology. As a result, he set out to build a platform that could prove disruptive in the wake of an economy he knew to be constantly changing.
