Jean-Denis Fréchette, Parliamentary Budget Officer

Roundtable Luncheon - The Activities and Role of the PBO in a Newly Elected Federal Government: What's Ahead

Jean-Denis Fréchette was appointed Parliamentary Budget Officer on September 3, 2013.  In his role, he is responsible for providing independent analysis to Parliament about trends in the national economy, the state of the nation’s finances and the estimates of the government, and upon request from a committee or parliamentarian, to estimate the financial cost of any proposal for matters over which Parliament has jurisdiction.  

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Fréchette had a 27-year career with the Library of Parliament where he held various management positions leading the Parliamentary Information and Research Service, as well as directing research and analysis in the Economics, Resources and International Affairs and the Industry, Innovation and Resources Divisions.  He also served as a co-principal on the Library team providing support to parliamentarians in respect of the Government’s Main Estimates.

Before his employment at the Library of Parliament, Mr. Fréchette worked as an economist with the Dairy Farmers of Canada, Hydro-Québec and the Université de Moncton.

Mr. Fréchette received a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master degree in economics, both from the Université de Montréal.  He is married and the father of two grown children.
