Mark Zelmer, the recently appointed Assistant Superintendent of Financial Institutions, discussed recent developments in the international financial regulatory agenda and how Canadian financial institutions and the Canadian economy will be impacted.

Mark Zelmer was appointed Assistant Superintendent, Regulation Sector, in December 2011. In this executive role, he is responsible for capital and accounting issues; actuarial politices and reviews; regulatory approvals and compliance; guidelines, regulations and interpretations. Mr. Zelmer represents OSFI on the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision.

Prior to joining OSFI, he was at the Bank of Canada where he held numerous positions since 1985, most recently as Chief, Financial Stability Department. In this role, he represented the central bank on the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision and was c0-chair of the Committeee's Macroprudential Supervision Group. He also served at the Interntional Monetary Fund (IMF) as Senior Economist and Deputy Division Chief in the Monetary and Exchange Department from 2000 to 2003.

Mr. Zelmer holds a Master of Science, Business Administration (Finance) degree from the University of British Columbia and a Bachelor of Commerce Honours degree in Finance from Queen's University.
