Lower Returns and Longer Lives: Meeting Canada’s Retirement Income Challenge

Dr. Moshe A. Milevsky is a finance professor at the Schulich School of Business at York University and Executive Director of the (non-profit) IFID Centre at the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematics in Toronto, Canada. He is also Managing Director of the Pi Longevity Extension (PiLE) Corporation, which is focused on helping pension funds, endowments and individuals extend the longevity of their investment portfolio.

Dr. Milevsky has published 10 books, over 60 peer-reviewed articles and is on the editorial board of numerous academic journals. He has written for the Wall Street Journal, the Globe and Mail, Research Magazine and the National Post, where he received numerous awards, including the Retirement Income Industry Association (RIIA) lifetime achievement award for applied research in 2008 and a Graham & Dodd scroll award from the CFA Institute in 2006.

Dr. Milevsky has delivered over 1,000 keynote lectures to audiences around the world. He is currently working on his next book manuscript, entitled: KING WILLIAM’S TONTINE: Why the Retirement Annuity of the Future Should Resemble its Past.

Thomas G. Reid is Senior Vice-President, Group Retirement Services (GRS), Sun Life Financial Canada. In this role, Mr. Reid oversees Canada’s largest provider of defined contribution pension arrangements, covering over one million Canadians.

Mr. Reid joined Sun Life Financial in 1994 as Assistant Vice-President of Finance. Since that time he has held increasingly senior positions throughout the Company in the areas of Finance, Corporate Development, Public and Investor Relations, and most recently in the Canadian Client Solutions business.

Prior to joining Sun Life Financial, Mr. Reid was in the Corporate Investment Banking Group at TD Bank. He also held senior positions at Central Guaranty Trust and Price Waterhouse.

Mr. Reid is an active member of several industry associations, including the Association of Canadian Pension Management, Treasury Management Association of Canada, and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants. He has lectured in finance and advanced accounting at the University of Toronto and Seneca College.

Mr. Reid holds an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Toronto and a Chartered Accountant designation.

Bill Robson took office as President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute in July 2006, after serving as the Institute’s Senior Vice President since 2003 and Director of Research since 2000. He has written more than 190 books, chapters, articles and monographs on such subjects as government budgets, pensions, healthcare financing, inflation and currency issues. His work has won awards from the Policy Research Secretariat, the Canadian Economics Association, and the Donner Canadian Foundation. Bill lectured on public finance and public policy at the University of Toronto from 2000 to 2003 and is a Senior Fellow at Massey College. He holds an ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors, and serves as an advisor to, or director of, several education-related and public affairs organizations.
