Retirement Security in Canada

Paul Moist is national president of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) – Canada’s largest union with more than 627,000 members.

Since being elected in 2003, Paul has used his leadership to champion public services such as health care, education, and municipal services. He is a leading labour spokesperson on the economy and trade issues. He has championed key political issues such as the need for senior levels of government to address Canada’s growing retirement security crisis.

A CUPE member since 1975 as a City of Winnipeg employee, Paul has worked for CUPE for 30 years, ten as a CUPE National Representative, ten as president of CUPE Local 500 (Winnipeg civic employees) before being elected national president.

A vice-president of the Canadian Labour Congress, he also serves as a Governor of the Labour College of Canada, and as a Director of SHARE (The Shareholder Association for Research and Education).

Moist is CUPE’s fifth national president and the first from Western Canada.
