Technology Assessment and Decision-Making: Keeping Pace with Innovation in Lean Times

Toronto ON, Osler, Hoskin and Harcourt Lecture Hall, 67 Yonge Street, Suite 300

Monday December 10, 2012 Health Policy Conference - Toronto

The C.D. Howe Institute hosted a one-day policy conference to discuss where health technology assessment (HTA) frameworks are being used in Canada and how they can improve the introduction of new technologies in Canadian health systems. The discussion also touched upon the lessons from HTAs abroad, and what how foreign experience can help improve the role of HTAs in healthcare. We convened business leaders, policymakers, and leading academics for this important off-the-record conversation.

Sessions included:

  • Where are health technology assessment (HTA) frameworks being used in Canada? Are HTAs improving the use and introduction of health technologies? What are the issues for governments and industry?
  • Perspectives from the Front Lines: What are the Issues for Patients and Physicians?
  • What are the governance models for adopting new technologies in healthcare? What are other countries doing? How do these different systems affect costs, value and appropriate patient access?
  • The Way Forward: How to Improve the Role of HTAs in Canadian Healthcare
