May 20, 2014 - William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the appointment of distinguished economist Andrew Spence as a Senior Fellow.

"Andrew Spence has wide knowledge and experience in macroeconomics, risk management, and investing. His expertise on monetary and financial sector policy will be valuable assets to the Institute," said Robson.

Andrew Spence is an economist and investment professional located in Toronto. 

Andrew has spent most of his professional life as an economist, strategist, research director and investor in the investment banking and asset management business.   Andrew was Global Head of Rates and FX Research at TD Securities, and Chief Economist for Canada at Deutsche Bank.

Andrew has diverse asset management experience at two of Canada's largest defined-benefit pension plans.  Andrew had a tactical role at OMERS Capital Markets where he was responsible for the Global Macro Portfolio and Quantitative Investments.  Prior to OMERS, Andrew held a strategic role at the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan where he was responsible for asset-liability research and strategic asset allocation.  He also managed the total fund overlay that controlled overall balance sheet risk.

During 2002 and 2003, Andrew was seconded to the Bank of Canada as Special Adviser to the Governor, and was an active member of the Monetary Policy Review Committee.  He was also a member of the C.D. Howe Institute's Monetary Policy Council.  

Andrew is an ad hoc lecturer at the University of Toronto, and has lectured at both the Rotman School of Management and the Munk School of Global Affairs. 

Andrew started his career at H.M. Treasury in London where he worked on macro-economic policy.  He holds an M.Phil in Economics from the University of Bath, England.
