March 31, 2015 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, congratulates David Laidler for winning the Thomas Guggenheim Prize for the History of Economic Thought. Recognizing a lifetime of achievement, the Guggenheim Prize is presented bi-annually by the Thomas Guggenheim Program at Ben Gurion University of the Negev.

“David is one of Canada’s foremost monetary scholars,” stated Robson. “We can’t think of anyone more deserving of this reward. On behalf of the Institute, we congratulate David for his extraordinary achievement!”

Dr. Laidler is the author of such lauded work as “Fabricating the Keynesian Revolution” and “The Golden Age of the Quantity Theory.”

He has been a scholar with the C.D. Howe Institute since 1990 and currently holds the title of Research Fellow. Recent Institute work of his includes “Money Still Talks – Is Anyone Listening?” and “Natural Hazards: Some Pitfalls on the Path to a Neutral Interest Rate.” Two of his most influential works, co-authored by the Institute’s William Robson, include: “The Great Canadian Disinflation: The Economics and Politics of Monetary Policy in Canada,” which shared the first Doug Purvis Memorial Prize for a work of excellence in Canadian economic policy, and “Two Percent Target: Canadian Monetary Policy Since 1991,” which won the Donner Prize for outstanding book of the year on Canadian public policy.

He received his B.Sc. Econ from the London School of Economics, his M.A. (Economics) from the University of Syracuse and his Ph.D. (Economics) from the University of Chicago, where he was a research assistant for Milton Friedman and Anna J. Schwartz’s “Monetary History of the United States, 1867–1960.”

He has taught since 1961 and held many full-time, visiting and part-time academic positions. He was a Professor of Economics at the University Of Western Ontario for many years, the Department Chairman for three years and is now a Professor Emeritus.
