June 26, 2017 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of Edward Neufeld, former Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance and Chief Economist of the Royal Bank of Canada, as a Senior Fellow.

“Ed’s accomplishments as an academic, in public service, and in business mark him as one of Canada’s most distinguished economists,” remarked Robson. “The C.D. Howe Institute has benefited enormously from his advice over many years, and we look forward to his continued contributions to our research.”

Over his career, Dr. Neufeld has been Professor of Economics at the University of Toronto, Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance in Ottawa, and Executive Vice President and Chief Economist of the Royal Bank of Canada.

Dr. Neufeld is a member of the C.D. Howe Institute’s National Council; director of the Atlantic Council of Canada and former member of the National Statistics Council; an Honorary Fellow of the London School of Economics and Political Science; and former member of the Board of several corporations including the Canadian National Railway Company.

Born in Nipawin, Saskatchewan, Dr. Neufeld attended the University of Saskatchewan and the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he graduated with a Ph.D. in Economics.  He was awarded the Hutchinson Silver Medal by the LSE for his thesis on the Bank of Canada, which was published.

Dr. Neufeld is the author of a number of books and articles including: Bank of Canada Operations and Policy, Money and Banking in Canada, A Global Corporation, and The Financial System of Canada.
