January 11, 2015 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of John Helliwell, Professor Emeritus of Economics at the University of British Columbia, as a Research Fellow.

“John is an extraordinarily accomplished economist, with major contributions in areas ranging from macroeconomics and economic modeling, through international transactions and exchange rates, taxation, energy, and most recently social capital and subjective wellbeing,” commented Robson. “The Institute is honoured to have him as an advisor and research collaborator.”   

John F. Helliwell is Senior Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research.

He was previously visiting special advisor at the Bank of Canada in 2003 to 2004, visiting research fellow of Merton College, Oxford, in 2003, of St. Catherine's College, Oxford, in 2001, Mackenzie King Visiting Professor of Canadian Studies at Harvard in 1991 to 94, and a member of the National Statistics Council from 2001 to 2015.

He has written numerous books and journal articles, and is co-editor of the World Happiness Reports.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, an Officer of the Order of Canada and received his D.Phil. in Economics from Oxford.
