March 14, 2016 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the re-appointment of John Richards, Professor at Simon Fraser University, as a Fellow-in-Residence and the Roger Phillips Scholar of Social Policy.

“John has made signal contributions to Canadian economic and social policy in areas ranging from foreign aid to Aboriginal affairs, and from education to income supports,” remarked Robson. “We are glad to continue our long and productive partnership with him.”   

Dr. Richards has been affiliated with the Institute for over twenty years. Recent works of his include:

He is a Professor in the public policy school at SFU and has written extensively on social policy in Canada. His current social policy focus is on social policy in South Asia and Aboriginal policy.

He co-edits Inroads, a Canadian policy journal. In addition, he has undertaken teaching and research in Bangladesh over the last decade. He heads the Centre for Policy Research, a policy institute linked to the International University of Business Agriculture and Technology.

He received his Ph.D. from Washington University, St. Louis.

The Roger Phillips Scholar of Social Policy is an endowed chair made possible by the late Roger Phillips, who was an exemplary supporter of the Institute. In 2006, he contributed what was then the largest gift in the Institute’s history, donating $1 million.
