February 2, 2016 – The Board and Staff of the C.D. Howe Institute mourn the passing of A. Edward Safarian, a long-time academic associate of the Institute.

Dr. Safarian’s pioneering work on foreign investment in Canada, begun in the 1950s, informed and inspired subsequent generations of students, analysts and policy-makers.

“He was an exemplary scholar, strongly motivated to improve public policy,” said William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute. “We offer our sympathy to his family, colleagues and friends, and share their appreciation for his contributions to knowledge and Canadian public life.”

Dr. Safarian authored his first Institute report in 1969. His most recent Institute work is the 2015 report “Simplifying the Rule Book: a Proposal to Reform and Clarify Canada’s Policy on Inward Foreign Direct Investment.”
