March 10, 2015 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the appointment of Nicholas Le Pan as Co-Chair of the Institute’s Financial Services Research Initiative and his re-appointment as a Senior Fellow. The Initiative is a multi-year program to report and advise on public policy affecting Canada’s financial sector. Mr. Le Pan joins the initiative’s current Chair, Edward Neufeld, former Assistant Deputy Minister of Finance Canada and former Executive Vice President and Chief Economist of the Royal Bank of Canada.

“Nick has extensive experience in financial services regulation in Canada and abroad,” said Robson. “We are delighted to be working with him in this program, and look forward to his insights.”

Mr. Le Pan is a member of the board of directors of CIBC, chairs its risk committee and is a member of its governance committee.  He also chairs the Canadian Public Accountability Board.  He consults on financial services matters, including for the International Monetary Fund.

He was Canada’s Superintendent of Financial Institutions from 2001–2006.   Prior to that, he held various positions responsible for supervision of banks and insurers, and for regulatory legislation and policy. He served as vice chair of the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. He has been a member of IMF teams that undertook Basel Core Principles assessments of the banking supervisory systems of the U.S., U.K., China, France and Switzerland.  From 2007 to 2013 he co-chaired the C.D. Howe Institute’s Pension Policy Council.

He holds a BA in economics from Carleton University and MA in economics from the University of Toronto.
