In this edition of Graphic Intelligence, we examine Alberta’s projected reduction in program spending from 2018-22, relative to previous governments in Alberta.
From 2008 to 2017, Alberta’s average annual spending growth of 5.1 percent was faster than any other province and significantly outpaced the Canada-wide average of 3.9 percent for all provincial and territorial governments. As such, a reduction in program spending is an effective path to fiscal balance, and will bring Alberta’s per capita spending in line with the rest of Canada.
