Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Council (MPC) today recommended that the Bank of Canada keep its target for the overnight rate, the very short-term interest rate it targets for monetary policy purposes, at 0.75 percent at its next announcement on March 4, 2015. Looking ahead, the Council called for the Bank to hold the target at .75 percent through to September, and called for a target of 1.25 a year from now.

Governance and Economic Performance Breakfast: Anita Anand, Dominic Barton, Sharon Geraghty, John Stackhouse

This breakfast was our inaugural event as part of our Governance and Economic Performance initiative. The initiative as a whole will examine the intersection of corporate governance and economic growth. Professor Anita Anand presented her paper which examines the rights of shareholders and the duties of Boards in the context of takeover bids. Dominic Barton, the Worldwide Managing Director at McKinsey & Co. and Sharon Geraghty, Partner at Torys discussed the papers findings.

C.D. Howe Institute Appoints Mati Dubrovinsky as a Research Fellow

February 23, 2015 – William Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute, announces the appointment of Mati Dubrovinsky as a Research Fellow.

“Mati has made important contributions to the Institute’s research, as an author and collaborator,” said Robson. “We are delighted to continue working with him.”

Dr. Dubrovinsky is a policy advisor in the Ontario Ministry of Finance.

Canada’s current copyright framework for recorded music is shortchanging artists, according to a new report from the C.D. Howe Institute. In “The Value of Copyrights in Recorded Music: Terrestrial Radio and Beyond,” author Marcel Boyer finds that the competitive value of recorded music is about 2.5 times greater than the current level of copyright payments.
