Summary

Aaron Regent is the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Magris Performance Materials, a leading North American-based industrial minerals company. Magris supplies over 10% of the world’s Niobium and over 50% of the North American Talc market from its operations in Canada and the United States. 

Mr. Regent is also the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Scotiabank and a member of the Board of Directors of Nutrien Ltd. 

Previously, Mr. Regent was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Barrick Gold Corporation from 2009 to 2012 and Chairman of African Barrick Gold PLC from its IPO in 2010 to 2012.

Before joining Barrick, he was Senior Managing Partner of Brookfield Asset Management having joined Brookfield in 1991. At Brookfield, amongst other roles, he served as Co-CEO of its infrastructure group from 2006 – 2008 and as President and Chief Executive Officer of global mining company Falconbridge Ltd. (a Brookfield Company) from 2002-2006. Falconbridge was sold to Xstrata Plc in 2006 for C$27 billion, then the largest transaction in the history of the mining industry.

Mr. Regent is a Board member of the C.D. Howe Institute, Trails Youth Initiatives and is the co-founder and co-chair of Mining4Life, which since its start in 2010 has raised more than $35 million for children’s health and education programs around the world. Mr. Regent also founded the C.D. Howe Institute Regent Debate Series to create a marquee platform for serious discussion on policy issues that are essential to Canada’s future. Debates have discussed Universal Basic Income, Canadian Competitiveness, Regulation of Big Technology, Health Care and Immigration. Mr. Regent is an honorary member of the Boards of the Sick Kids Hospital Foundation, Plan International Canada and the National Ballet of Canada. Mr. Regent is a chartered accountant (CA, CPA) and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (FCA, FCPA).
