Rob Stewart, Deputy Minister, Financial Crimes Agency Creation
Rob Stewart was appointed Deputy Minister to lead the creation of Canada’s Financial Crimes Agency in March 2026. From 2022 to 2026, he was the Deputy Minister of International Trade at Global Affairs Canada, overseeing matters of trade policy, trade promotion, economic security and investment attraction. From 2019 to 2022, he served as Deputy Minister of Public Safety Canada, where he provided leadership in the domains of national security, community safety, Indigenous policing, firearms policy and emergency management.
Rob joined the public service in 1993 and held a series of positions in the Department of Finance Canada, including Assistant Deputy Minister for International Trade and Finance from 2010 to 2014, Assistant Deputy Minister for Financial Sector Policy from 2014 to 2016, and Associate Deputy Minister from 2016 to 2019, where he was the Government of Canada's finance deputy for the G7 and G20 and for the Financial Stability Board. Before joining the Department of Finance, Rob worked at Export Development Canada and in the Canadian sport system. He has a BA from Carleton University and an MBA from the University of Ottawa.
