How Hydro, Nuclear, and Renewables Shape Our Electricity Grid

Canada’s electricity generation mix has shown remarkable consistency over the years, anchored by hydroelectric power as the dominant source. Nuclear power remains a cornerstone of the national electricity supply, while wind power has established itself as the leading renewable alternative to hydro. Notable disruptions occurred in 2023-24, when drought conditions constrained hydroelectric output, leading to increased reliance on thermal generation and electricity imports to maintain grid stability.
