Employment Opportunity: President and Chief Executive Officer

This is a unique opportunity for a highly skilled strategic leader to join the C.D. Howe Institute as its President & Chief Executive Officer, overseeing a broad portfolio spanning research and policy, membership and fundraising, operations and finance, and public engagement. In this critical role, you will strengthen the Institute’s national influence and credibility while advancing its mission to raise Canadians’ living standards through independent, evidence-based research and rigorous expert review.

The C.D. Howe Institute is a registered charity, and an independent not-for-profit research institute whose mission is to raise Canadians’ living standards by fostering economically sound public policies. Widely considered to be Canada’s most influential think tank, the Institute is a source of trusted policy intelligence, distinguished by research that is nonpartisan, evidence-based and subject to definitive expert review. The Institute is now seeking its next Chief Executive Officer to lead the organization into a new era of growth, influence, and impact.

Responsibilities:

  •  Report to the Board of Directors and ensure the Institute delivers rigorous, relevant, and timely research and commentary on issues central to Canada’s prosperity, including fiscal and monetary policy, healthcare, human capital, competition and innovation, and international economic relations.
  • Safeguard the Institute’s reputation for accuracy, independence, and non-partisanship while providing strategic oversight of its research agenda, operations, and finances. 
  • Lead a team of committed and hardworking individuals dedicated to the Institute’s mission.
  • Cultivate strong relationships with members, funders, policymakers, academics, media, and thought leaders to secure the resources and credibility needed to sustain and grow the Institute’s influence.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Be a respected thought leader with a sophisticated understanding of Canada’s economy, institutions, and public policy.
  • Be recognized for your expertise in one or more policy domains central to the Institute’s work and for your ability to translate complex ideas into clear and compelling messages.
  • Bring senior leadership experience that includes working with a Board of Directors, developing and executing strategy, and stewarding budgets and the organization’s financial sustainability.
  • Be an inspiring communicator and credible public voice, able to engage policymakers, business leaders, academics, media, and the broader public.
  • Be known for your intellectual curiosity, integrity, and nonpartisan approach, and for your capacity to motivate and enable high-performing teams.
  • Have postgraduate qualification relevant to public policy or economics, along with experience in policymaking, policy-relevant research, or advocacy, will be considered a strong asset.
