October 15, 2025 – The C.D. Howe Institute congratulates International Fellow Peter Howitt for winning the 2025 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences as a co-recipient for his work on creative destruction.
“Peter’s work has reshaped how we understand innovation, growth, and the forces that drive modern economic progress,” stated William B.P. Robson, President and CEO of the C.D. Howe Institute. “We are delighted about this recognition of his contributions to economic theory and note the value of his insights for economic policies.”
Dr. Howitt has been a valued contributor to the C.D. Howe Institute for more than 25 years, writing on monetary policy, intellectual property, and competition. He has served as an Institute Fellow-in-Residence and International Fellow.
Currently, he is a Professor Emeritus of Economics at Brown University. Prior to joining Brown, he was on the faculties of the University of Western Ontario and Ohio State University.
“Peter Howitt's ability to combine brilliantly original abstraction with deep insight into down-to-earth policy issues assures him a permanent place among the very best economists of any era,” said University of Western Ontario Professor Emeritus David Laidler, a C.D. Howe Institute Research Fellow and long-time contributor.
“To have enjoyed his friendship and intellectual generosity for fifty years has been an immense privilege.”
