July 6, 2026 – The C.D. Howe Institute is pleased to announce the appointment of Trevor Tombe to its prestigious Monetary Policy Council (MPC).

Chaired by the Institute’s President and CEO Jeremy Kronick, the Council acts as a shadow Bank of Canada Governing Council, offering an independent assessment of the monetary stance needed to achieve the Bank’s 2-percent inflation target.

Comprised of the chief economists of the six largest Canadian banks and six leading academic economists and financial market experts, members vote on the upcoming announcement, the subsequent announcement, and the announcements six months and one year ahead.

The Council’s next announcement is set to take place Thursday, July 9, in advance of the Bank of Canada’s interest rate announcement on Wednesday, July 15.

A Professor at the University of Calgary’s Department of Economics and Director of Canada’s Productivity Initiative at The School of Public Policy, Tombe steps into the shoes of Stephen D. Williamson, who served as an MPC member from 2020 to 2026.

“Trevor’s expertise will further enhance the Council’s reputation for informing Canadians about the challenges and opportunities the Bank of Canada considers when setting monetary policy to achieve its 2 percent inflation target,” says Kronick.

“We are grateful to Stephen for his years of service and valuable contributions, which have helped strengthen the C.D. Howe Institute’s reputation for independent, evidence-based analysis.”
