Ontario’s Education Quality and Accountability Office’s 2016/2017 results released this week show that for the second year in a row, only 50 per cent of Grade 6 students met the provincial math standard, compared with 61 per cent ten years ago. It is important to reverse this trend since early achievement in math is a strong predictor of later success in math and future career options.

Another concerning point to emerge from the EQAO tests is that the percentage of students who met the math standard in Grade 3 but did not do so in Grade 6 has increased. Bank of Canada Should Hold Overnight Rate at 0.75 Percent Next Week; Hike to 1.25 Percent by September 2018: C.D. Howe Institute Monetary Policy Council

August 31, 2017 — The C.D. Howe Institute’s Monetary Policy Council (MPC) called for the Bank of Canada to keep its target for the overnight rate, the very short-term interest rate it targets for monetary policy purposes, at 0.75 percent at its next announcement on September 6, 2017. The MPC called for the Bank to hike to 1.00 percent at the following announcement in October, with a further increase to 1.25 percent by September 2018.
