The Path from the Canada Investment Summit to a More Prosperous Canada
Ahead of the Canada Investment Summit, the C.D. Howe Institute is asking: what can we do to make Canada an even stronger destination for investment and growth?
From September 8 to 11, stay tuned for our analysis and insights on how Canada can create the conditions for investment, and the improvements that will bring to our productivity and living standards.
Canada is looking to attract $1 trillion in investment over the next half decade. The Canada Investment Summit is a promising signal that we, as a country, understand the opportunity in front of us.
Investment opens the door to higher wages and higher productivity, which leads to improved living standards. Give Canadians the tools they need, and they will produce what the world needs.
We have an abundance of natural resources, world-class talent, a highly educated workforce, and – despite the tariff barriers erected by the current US administration – access to major global markets. But strong fundamentals alone do not attract investment. Sound, predictable public policy is also required.
So, what can we do to make Canada an even stronger destination for investment and growth?
First, we need to get more major projects built and build them the right way. That means having more transparency about which priorities are in the national interest, and clearer approval processes and timelines. It also means applying these standards broadly, beyond just the projects assigned to the Major Projects Office. This is how we give investors the certainty they need, complete projects more efficiently, and create lasting economic growth.
Second, we need to use Canada’s energy edge. Energy is Canada’s most valuable export and is critical to diversifying Canada’s markets as well as powering the sectors of the future. We must be leaders in all forms of energy, from conventional to renewables, and other clean energy technologies – balancing growth, resilience, affordability, and sustainable development.
Finally, we need a tax system more conducive to new capital. Lower and simpler taxes for business and individuals would make it clear that Canada is a country where you can build and grow.
The Canada Investment Summit is a moment to look forward, to show the world that Canada is a place where capital thrives, and where investment leads to better living standards for all Canadians.
Let’s make Canada a place where investment wants to come – and stay.
Sincerely,
